Valle d'Aosta
The region
The Valle d'Aosta is an autonomous region in north-west of Italy. It borders France to the west, Switzerland to the north and the Piedmont region to the south and east. With an area of 3263 km2 and a population of about 120,000, is the smaller, less populated and less densely populated region in Italy.
It is perhaps the most mountainous regions of Italy, as it is among the highest peaks of Europe: Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso and the Matterhorn.
The valleys are mostly of glacial origin, except the larger that is formed by Dora Baltea.
The climate, for the conformation of the territory, is very different: in fact, depending on the altitude it goes from a continental climate in the lower valleys to an alpine type in the highest areas, up to one characterized by very strict temperatures on higher mountains.
Rainfall is highly variable, too: in Winter snowfalls are abundant and numerous, but in summer there is a general drought. Water however, is not lacking: many are the glaciers that melting in summer promote a luxuriant vegetation; besides, in the entire region was carried out a wide funnelling program to allow irrigate cultivated fields.
