Abruzzo
The region
o is located less than 80 miles east of Rome. It is bordered by Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and south-west, Molise to the south-east and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Although geographically it is more a region of central Italy, ISTAT (National Statistics Institute) believes that it is a part of Southern Italy, especially given its long-standing membership of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
For its wealth of castles and medieval towns, especially near the city of L'Aquila, the region has gained in some quarters the nickname "Abruzzoshire" by analogy with the "Chiantishire" nickname sometimes used to refer to the Chianti area in Tuscany, but, unfortunately, is still off the beaten path of most visitors to Italy.
