Molise

The region

Molise borders with Abruzzo to the north-west, Lazio to the west, Campania to the south-west, the Puglia to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east.

With an area of 4 438 km2, Molise is the smallest region of southern Italy, and the country's youngest region as a whole.

Molise is a typical inner and mountainous region, despite its 35 km of coastline on the Adriatic Sea. In fact, approximately 55% of the region consists of mountains and the remaining 45% of plateaus (both interior and coastal). The absence of the predominance of plain and mountain areas are a natural barrier for the social and economic development of the region.

The climate is directly influenced by the topography: the climate is, in fact, marittime in the narrow coastal strip, temperate in the highlands and continental in the inland and mountain areas.

Many inner city areas have been abandoned by the younger population, which by necessity or lack of opportunities for professional development, has had to migrate away to Northern richest cities.
