Piedmont

The region

Piedmont is surrounded on three sides by the Alps and bordered by France, Switzerland and by the Italian regions of Lombardy, Liguria, Valle d'Aosta and only for a short part by Emilia Romagna. Piedmont is mountainous for 43.3%, with large areas of hill (30.3%) and lowlands (26.4%).

Piedmont is the second largest among the 20 Italian administrative regions, after Sicily.

The flat area coincides almost entirely with the upper basin of the Po River, which originates from the slopes of Monviso in the west of the region. From the highest peaks of the land slopes towards the hills, again, rising slightly and then down towards the great plain of the Po.

The landscape of the countryside is very varied: it goes from the rugged peaks of the massif of Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso, to the wet rice fields of Vercelli and Novara, from the rolling hills of the Langhe and Monferrato to the plain of the Po.
