Campania
History
In much of its history, the region was central to the development of the most significant Western civilization. The area was colonized by ancient Greeks who made it an important area of Magna Graecia, until it came under Roman domination. During the era of Rome the area was the favored cultural location of emperors, for its balance between the Greek and Roman culture.
Then, during the Middle Ages was fragmented into many duchies and principalities, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and of the Lombards.
It was only with the Normans that the small independent states were gathered as part of the Kingdom of Sicily. The mainland portion, was split, then, from the islands forming the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that in Campania converged elements of Spanish culture, especially French and Aragonese. With the Bourbon domination Campania began to be part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies until it became part of the Kingdom of Italy after unification in 1860.
