Main attractions
In early 1994, UNESCO declared the Sassi of Matera a World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, Fiat (italian car manifacturer) has opened a large manufacturing plant in Melfi, leading to an economic recovery.
In the same year was established the National Park of Pollino.
Matera has gained international acclaim for its "Sassi", derived from a prehistoric settlement, believed to be one of the earliest human settlements in Italy. They consist of dwelling dug directly into the tufa rock very present in the areas of Basilicata and Apulia. The charm of the stones of Matera is not in dispute: Hundreds of homes dug into the rock so close to each other that often roads coincide with the roof of the house below.
