DOC wines of Piedmont
Piedmont is the Italian wine region that has more wines with denomination of origin: Piedmont DOC wines are, in fact, more than 40 and 12 are the DOCG wines. Among them, the most part are the red wines that represent over 75% of wine production in Piedmont. Not to be underestimate, however, are the white wines, which, indeed, with real excellence, as Erbaluce, Gavi, Arneis and Moscato d'Asti and the famous Asti Spumante, are increasingly winning the hearts and palates of fans. Piedmont is a unique wine region, capable of bringing together a wide variety of landscapes and territories: along with the vast Po Valley, in fact, there are the large hilly areas of the Langhe and Monferrato and the great alpine massifs. The large morphological differences are reflected in a variety of flavors and aromas of wines from Piedmont, which often reserve exciting surprises. The vine is cultivated mainly in the vast hilly areas and foothills: the difficulties imposed by the territory, the altitude of the vineyards and the characteristics of the soil, though favorable to the cultivation of grapes, have often forced wine producers of Piedmont to sacrifice quantity at the benefit of the quality of wines produced. Among the various producing areas of Piedmont, the most famou certainly is perhapss that of the Langhe area, a vast area of hills, between Asti and Cuneo, with its characteristic ridges (Lange), where are mainly cultivated Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Moscato, grapes at the base of the production of wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco. The Monferrato, between Asti and Alessandria is home to a wide variety of wine: certainly there are the ubiquitous Barbera and Nebbiolo, king and queen of Piedmont's vines, but are also widely cultivated Moscato, Grignolino, and Freisa. Among other interesting wine areas of Piedmont we shall mention: the area of Roero, in the province of Asti creates great white wines made from Arneis, even if there are red wines made from Nebbiolo grapes; the area around Tortona that produce Gavi , Cortese and Brachetto; the Canavese home of the excellent Erbaluce; the hilly area around Novara with Bonarda, Gattinara, Ghemme and Lessona; the Carema area, near to the Val d'Aosta, hearth of the famous Carema DOC.
