History
IThe name is inspired by the name of the town of Luni, 'portvs Ivnae' - Antique Roman Port.
Lunae has roots in the millennium history of this land and of its population from which it inherited the wine making tradition.
Lunae comes from Paolo Bosoni's sensitiveness and passion. In 1966, after inheriting the family business which had been dedicated to agriculture for generations, he concentrated on viniculture.
His work and research have enabled him to increase the cultivated hectares, to recognize the most suitable areas and to recreate traditional vines.
He now follows and co-ordinates the work both in the cellar and vineyard, helped by his brother Lucio and 3 young enologists, an agronomist and a cellar specialist.
His wife Antonella Bertolla is responsible for administration and co-ordinates the relationship with the 150 wine growers and contributors.
In 2004, respecting family roots and rediscovering its past, CA'LUNAE was created with wine cellars on display and a centre for the production and culture of wine in an antique eighteenth century rural complex. Inside there is a museum of the material wine culture, the wine cellar, rooms dedicated to wine tasting and an antique distillery Essentiae Ivnae.
The development of these new projects has coincided with the arrival of the new generation of the family. Diego, who is responsible for research, development and communication, as well as the laboratory and distillery, and, his sister Debora who deals with reception and external relations.
Our land extends from the hills of Luni at the edge of eastern Liguria to the borders of Tuscany in the province of La Spezia. The cultivated land is characterized by small pieces of land split into areas on hills, at the foot of hills and on flat land near the archaelogical site of the Antique Roman Port in Luni.
The Apuane Alps and the mountains protect the land from the cold north wind, good ventilation comes from the sea and there is a noticeable range of temperature which is excellent for the quality and characteristics of the wine.
The composition of the land is geologically varied, a rich mixture in the hilly areas and those at the foot of the hills and clayey ground in the flat land. This variety is a distinct characteristic of the territory and represents great resources.
IVineyards
Our vineyards are in the commune of Ortonovo and Castelnuovo Magra (La Spezia) and they extend over 45 hectares, 3 of which have experimental vineyards studying and developing the characteristics of traditional vines, in collaboration with the Ligurian Region and with the National Centre of Research in Turin.
The property extends from the plain to 250m altitude. The favorable exposure, the considerable range of temperature, the excellent light and the diverse nature of the ground, intensify the strength of the vines, most of which are autochthonous, such as Vermentino, Albarola, Malvasia Pollera Nera and Massareta.
Expert wine growers and young technicians, supervised by the Vine Expert Giancarlo Cucurnia and Paolo Bosoni, work daily in the vineyards respecting nature and traditional cultivation. The use of weed killers has been eliminated and natural fertilizers are used.
The grapes are harvested depending on different exposure, the different types cultivated and also depending on a series of analysis and tasting of the bunches which are then accurately chosen.
Paolo Bosoni's idea is to preserve the quality created in the vineyard through constant and attentive work during all phases: from the harvesting to the bottling. A commitment sustained with passion and rationality and with respect for the land and research.
The wine cellar which is equipped with temperature controlled steel tanks and oak barriques and barrels, is where these principals are expressed. Paolo Bosoni works with his brother Lucio and a group of 3 young wine specialists, following up his own philosophy with consistency.
Wines
Our 'Vermentino' has 2 labels: the 'Etichetta Grigia' and the ' Etichetta Nera' which are distinguished by the selection of different vines and vinification.
The 'Etichetta Grigia' comes from a careful choice of the right moment to pick the grapes and rigorous fermentation of the juice in the temperature controlled steel tanks ,with limited use of sulphites. Freshness and elegance are enhanced and floral and citrus notes are perceived while flavour and balance are tasted.
The 'Etichetta Nera' comes from a particular selection of grapes from the mostly used vineyards. Only the best bunches are picked which are then subjected to cryomaceration for about 48 hours, gentle pressing and vinification, again in temperature controlled steel tanks. The outcome is a complex wine: the traditional characteristics of vermentino are enriched and enhance sensations both in the nose and mouth. Structure and acidity give the bottled wine a long life with interesting evolutions.
The white wines come from the combination of traditional antique vines, among these the white 'Golfo dei Poeti' " Leukotea”, obtained from vineyards characterized by particular exposure, some only a short distance from the sea. The malvasia gives the wine roundness and softness, sustained by an excellent flavour and freshness due to the presence of 'vermentino', 'albarola' and 'greco'.
The white 'Colli di Luni' "Fior di Luna" and "Onda di Luna" come from 'vermentino', 'greco' and 'albarola. 'Albarola' has the classical characteristics of 'vermentino - freshness and flavour, whereas 'greco’ amplifies the range of smells and sensations felt both in the nose and mouth.
The red wines come from research and development of the main traditional vines. The study of the organoleptic characteristics of each variety in the different terroirs has brought about distinctive oenological choices through non invasive wine making techniques.
The use of wooden barrels for the wine making and refining is moderate and well balanced with great care, taking into consideration the characteristics of the year. Our will is to improve the quality of the vine without changing nature. Niccolò V, Auxo e Circus.
Three wines: 'Cavagino', 'Niccolò V Riserva' and 'Horae', which are produced in small quantities and obtained exclusively from 3 vineyards in suitable areas for exposure, climate and soil composition. Paolo Bosoni selects the grapes and then makes particular choices in the cellar. His wish is to create wines, with a rich personality, which strongly expresses the nature of the place they come from.
The rosé 'Golfo dei Poeti' " Mearosa" (100% autochthonous red vermentino) comes after years of studying and researching the vineyards and cellars, to be able to understand the real characteristics of this antique vine.

The bond with the territory
We have chosen 150 local wine growers who work daily with the company's technical staff and who contribute their small production, so maintaining the unique tradition and quality of the vine growing in our area. This collaboration has allowed Lunae to re-evaluate particular suitable areas, to re discover antique autochthonous vines which have great potential and to give new life and new incentive to these small rural realities.
