History

Founded in June 1907, a time of economic depression, the cooperative dedicated itself from its very beginnings to promoting the cultivation of top-quality wines and ensuring adequate revenue for its members.

It is due to the farsightedness of the authors of the early oenological guidelines that the production facilities have, in essence, preserved their original functionality. Side by side with the traditional wooden casks dating back to the days of the founding fathers, state-of-the-art wine-making techniques ensure outstanding quality and testify to that harmonious and functional symbiosis of tradition and modern technology which is the hallmark of San Michele-Appiano.

Vineyards

St. michael Eppan Vineyards

Our work starts in the vineyard. Climate, topography and soils form the natural environment in which our vines thrive. It is our responsibility to interfere with them sparingly and to keep them as close to natural conditions as possible.

The terroir is our special capital. By ecological management of our vineyards we make sure to promote the biological balance of the vines in a natural way. By growing plants between the rows of vines we regulate the air and water balance of the soil, promote the formation of top soil, ward off erosion and create an ideal habitat for beneficial organisms. Where necessary, organic fertilisers are used. The trend is definitely in favour of biological pest control.

The choice of grape varieties is determined by soil characteristics and the microclimate. Each grape variety has its preferred site.

In South Tyrol the classic training form on slopes is still the pergola, though the Guyot system – training on wire trellises – is increasingly used instead. On flat country and slight slopes the Guyot system is the preferred form for all grape varieties other than Schiava. This new form of wine training is not only more economical and requires less work: our wine growers have also resorted to it because it favours smaller yields with a higher grape quality.

Appiano, South Tyrol’s largest wine growing community, is favoured with some of the very best vineyards of the region. Our very special crus include Sanct Valentin, Schulthaus, Gleif and Montiggl, to mention only a few.

St. Valentin

St.Valentin - St. michael Eppan

Our Sanct Valentin Cru range grows in the heart of the traditional Eppan white wine area, about 500 metres above sea level and matures on the hillside with a south to southeastern exposure.

The clayey, gravelly soil is ideal for growing wine varieties such as Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon and Pinot Blanc. The warm microclimate, refreshed by the winds coming from the Mendel massif, facilitates the ripening of these grape varieties. The vines still grow primarily on pergola trained vineyards, even though the newer ones are now planted on the Gujot system. Wines coming from Sanct Valentin are particularly fruity with a pleasant level of acidity.

Schulthaus

Schulthaus - St. Michael Eppan

The Cru called SCHULTHAUS stretches in Eppan Berg, over an area of 25 hectares characterised by calcareous clavers, on lightly inclined, southern to southeastern exposed slopes and at an altitude of 480-540 metres above sea level. Schulthaus is the area traditionally known for the cultivation of Pinot Blanc and hence represents the one of the best areas for our Pinot Blanc.

Pinot Blanc vines grow exclusively, some up to 40 years in age and nearly all of them trained on classic trellises, in the mild, well-ventilated microclimate of the SCHULTHAUS area that enjoys cool and fresh nights during the ripening season. The typical fruity-fresh, juicy South Tyrolean SCHULTHAUSER Pinot Blanc thrives here with its fine, stimulating acidity.

Gleif

Gleif - St. Michael Eppan

At the foot of the romantic Gleif Chapel, above the village of St. Michael Eppan, the vineyards of the Gleif hill stretch out along the extensive and relatively steep eastern slope. The clayey, gravelly soil and the warm location with abundant sunshine offer ideal conditions for our Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. Gleif is one of the best areas for growing our younger vines planted with the Gujot system. This area gives mellow and particularly structured wines with a fine, moderate acidity.

Montggl

Monticolo - St. Michael Eppan

The production area called Montiggl is in the heart of the Montiggler wood, very close to two romantic lakes, the Minor Lake Montiggl and the Major Lake Montiggl. Mainly Riesling, Sauvignon and Chardonnay grape varieties grow in the slightly hilly vineyard, at an altitude of about 450 metres. Very unique white wines with a consistent and pronounced palate come from this warm, protected clayey and gravelly soil, which, with its southeastern to southwestern exposure, enjoys sun throughout the entire day.

Cellar

the cellar of St.michael Eppan

Our cellars reflect an exemplary symbiosis between our cultural heritage and innovative winemaking techniques.

We pay great attention to pressing fresh and healthy grapes separately according to their origin and quality. We handle the gifts of nature with great respect, closely analysing their properties and treating them with the utmost care throughout every phase of vinification.

We excel in the art of attuning all stages of the winemaking process to the different grape varieties and the specific properties of their sites of origin, refining them like precious gems. Our success is the fruit of many years of experience, innumerable tests and experiments and the careful observation of all stages of the process, never losing sight of our ultimate objective: top-quality products.

STAINLESS STEEL
The use of stainless steel is indispensable in the modern winemaking process. From fermentation to storage, stainless steel is the predominant material used in our cellars. The shiny tanks ensure not only maximum hygiene and cleanliness but also allow the maturing wines to preserve the natural aromas and freshness of our grape varieties.

WOODEN CASKS
The old cellars that date back to the foundation of our winery still contain the relics of past times: the big wooden casks with their carefully carved fronts commemorating special events. While wood was the only material used in old wine cellars, it has been gradually replaced by concrete containers and finally by stainless steel. Today, the wine world is rediscovering wood. In the last few years we have completely renovated our cellar by introducing large oak casks with capacities of 4,000 – 7,500 litres. Wine processing in the big wooden casks typical of South Tyrol plays a fundamental role in our winery.

BARRIQUES
Since the 1980s, the heart of our winery has been the barrique cellar, one of the largest in the province. Our highest quality wines mature here in several hundred small casks of French oak. And it is not only the red wines which age here for many months, but in particular also the great white wines, which achieve perfection during the ultimate refining stage. The result is complex wines due to the perfect symbiosis of fruit and wood.

Wines

all the wines by St. michael Eppan

Our average annual production is approximately 2,600,000 bottles, of which 1,860,000 are 0.75 litre bottles and 740,000 1 litre bottles. Red wines account for 46% of the production and white wines for the remaining 54%. La Schiava represents the lion’s share of our grape varieties; also the red wines, however, such as Lagrein, Cabernet and Merlot, but above all Pinot Noir, are playing an increasingly important role in our range of wines.

Our Pinot Blanc undoubtedly plays a prominent role among the white wines (accounting for 23% of the total production). The vineyards in Eppan and immediate surroundings are the best for the production of this exceptional wine. Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris grape varieties yield great wines too. Müller Thurgau, Riesling and Moscato Giallo also perform well here.

All the production is divided into three qualitative lines:

Crus

The CRU LINE comprises a selection of extraordinary wines from choice growing areas and produced by individual winemaking methods according to our own, strict quality criteria. Each of these wines is a world unto itself waiting to be discovered.

Special mention should be made of the white wines with their incomparable shades of flavour. They are immensely successful: To give but one example, annual production of our Pinot Bianco "Schulthauser", one of the most typical South Tyrolean Pinots with a special character of its own, amounts to 200 000 bottles of constant, outstanding quality.

Sanct Valentin

The Top Line of the San Michele-Appiano winery: our wines with the SANCT VALENTIN label. Each bottle promises a special experience and is the product of our winery’s constant quest for quality. We have pursued this course of action ever since 1986, to ensure the best possible quality year after year.
