Overwiev

The Castle of Monterinaldi settlement, in the commune of Radda in Chianti, in the heart of the oldest historical area of the Chianti Classico, is situated near an ancient Etruscan route.

As regards the history of this ancient place, a document written in December 1010, refers to "Count Gottifredo Gottizio, of Lombardic descent and Lord of Monterinaldi." The castle stood until 1268, when the Sienese, following the victory of the battle of Montaperti, destroyed its boundary walls, the main tower and the three house of the castle. Due to the last destruction during the World War II, only a part of it is still standing surrounded by some ancient houses.

The castle of Monterinaldi is at present the center of the homonymous farm whose wine-making activity is based at the La Pesanella, not far from the castle. The Agricola Monterinaldi, property of the Ciampi family since 1961, is one of the most modern farms in the wine testing sector.

La tenuta

The estate extends for over 400 hectares and includes vineyards, olive groves, walnut groves, woodland and pastures. The farms and farmhouses in the area have maintained their rural appearance and are now home to the estate workers - comfortable living quarters in the splendid sunny Chianti Classico wine growing region.

Total Extension:

  • Vineyards: 65 ha - 160 acres(almost all the vineyards are given over the production of Chianti Classico DOCG);
  • Olive groves: 20 ha;
  • Walnut groves: 20 ha.
  • Vines: mainly Sangiovese (60 ha);
  • Other vines: Canaiolo nero, Colorino, Malvasia nera, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Gamay.
  • Olive varieties: Frantoio, Moraiolo, Leccino, Pendolino;
  • Yearly production: 1500-3000 Kg of low-acidity (~0,20/0,25%) extra-virgin olive oil.

Ampelograhic characteristics:

  • medium mixture earth (marl-limestone);
  • main altitude of vineyards: 350-400 meters;
  • exposure: almost entirely southwards.

Planting:

  • density: 4000/6400 plants/ha;
  • growing system: Tuscan arch, plain Guyot, cordone speronato; various stocks and clones of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot.

Harvesting:

the grapes are picked only by hand at the end of September and during the month of October, in various stages depending on the condition and ripeness of the bunches and type of wine desired. A particular care is used during the harvest in those wineyards processed with thinning for quality improvement.

Storage capacity of cellars: 13,700 Hl of which

  • 10,500 Hl in vetrified cement vats,
  • 700 Hl in stainless steel,
  • 2,000 Hl in oak casks (Slavonia),
  • 300 Hl in French oak barriques and tonneaux.

the cellar

The grapes are processed entirely in our cellar, where the wines are also stored and aged. There is a tunnel leading from the original cellar, located beneath the owner's house, into the main area where nearly all the winemaking activities take place.

Loyalty to tradition is a fundamental principle at Monterinaldi. Our primary goal continues to be to offer Chianti Classico in its most traditional form. This does not, of course, preclude the use of new technologies and equipment designed to enhance quality without affecting the typical attributes of the product.

Chianti Classico is aged first in barrels (both Slavonian oak barrels and small French barriques) and then refined in bottles, for a period ranging from 6 months to 2 years.

The old underground cellar is particularly suitable for aging wines: a large room has been fashioned from the interior to provide ideal accommodation for 150 French barriques.

Adjacent to the cellar is our "orciaia", where extra-virgin olive oil is preserved in old terracotta jars before being sold to the most demanding customers.

Premi e riconoscimenti

Each harvest is a unique event and the wines that result from it are equally unique. The only factor that must always remain constant is the commitment to achieving the best quality possible. Over the years, our estate's pursuit of this objective has brought it numerous acknowledgments and awards, which have stimulated us to keep working in the right direction.

Year after year our wines have earned considerable praise from sommeliers and oenologists. Specialized trade publications have also always had flattering things to say about us. Wine magazines such as Decanter and Wine Spectator have assigned excellent ratings to Monterinaldi wines, thus justly rewarding our efforts.

As in previous years, in 2002 we submitted some of our products to the scrutiny of international experts. The samples submitted qualified among the top entries in their categories.

  • Chianti Classico Castello di Monterinaldi 2000 received Mention Découverte from an international jury at the Sélections Mondiales 2002 in Montreal.
  • At the Concours Mondial Bruxelles, no fewer than 3 of our wines were awarded a Silver Medal: Chianti Classico Castello di Monterinaldi 1999, Pesanella 1997 IGT Toscana and Vinsanto di Chianti Classico Monterinaldi - Riserva 1975.
