Overview

Carpineto wines are time tested guarantees of top quality, known by consumers worldwide.
Founded in 1967 by the Sacchet and Zaccheo families, the estates are managed with enthusiasm, sensibility and ‘know-how’, but most of all, with the will to continuously improve.

Carpineto is guided by it’s own deeply rooted production principles complemented by those of the appellations in which it operates. Vineyards are managed according to sustainable, low impact farming principles, winemaking techniques respect the natural processes that transform grapes into wine. This combination gives birth to elegant wines of great longevity, that are a true representation of their territory, neatly displaying the character of each vineyard and appellation. Production techniques are not based on old “wife’s tales”. They are based on the mastery of viticulture and winemaking sciences that, together, bring exciting yet reliable wines to market with a good price to quality relationship.

Carpineto’s production statistics are as follows:

  • 95% red wine with the majority aged three or more years before release;
  • HL 55,000 (1.5M gallons) winery capacity;
  • 88% estate grown grapes;
  • 2M bottles produced annually
History

Founded in 1967, Carpineto is a partnership between Giovanni C. Sacchet and Antonio M. Zaccheo, whose original mission was to produce a world-class red wine from the Chianti Classico appellation. This was a radical departure from the marketplace of the times when most Chianti was still produced in the traditional winemaking style. Carpineto’s visionary founders recognized the untapped potential of the Tuscan landscape to produce truly great wines.

By applying modern viticulture and winemaking techniques, they dramatically exceeded the quality standards of the day. Under their leadership, Carpineto developed an award winning, international reputation for elegant wines of approachable intensity and extract, as well as consistency vintage after vintage.

Today Carpineto has reinforced these characteristics, while maintaining an approachable wine style due in part to an extensive bottle-aging program. In fact "riserva" wines are bottle-aged a total of six to twelve months longer than the minimum time required by DOCG appellation rules. Today experimentation goes hand in hand with the spirit of innovation of the founders, with respect for historical Tuscan values.

The product line includes wines from the most prestigious Tuscan DOCG appellations to varietal specific wines of great structure, as well as innovative proprietary blends. Carpineto exports the majority of its wine production to over 70 countries worldwide. About 95% of Carpineto’s wine production is red wine, with the majority being wines that are aged three or more years before their release date.

Founders

Giovanni Carlo Sacchet

An enologist by vocation, not by family tradition, Giovanni Carlo Sacchet fell in love with Tuscany, his adopted land. He is originally from the province of Belluno, a mountainous area at the northeast corner of Italy. After graduating from the School of Enology in Conegliano he moved to Tuscany where he began his professional experience contributing to the Tuscan wine Renaissance.

It was destiny that he should meet Antonio Mario Zaccheo, with whom he shares the same passion and objectives. Together they embarked on a great adventure in Chianti Classico called ‘Carpineto’. Together with his staff, he follows in great detail the daily operations of the winery, from winemaking to bottling, including label design. On a hillside overlooking the Chianti hills and the Valdarno Superiore valley, near the Gaville estate, is where Giancarlo, his wife Daniela, and their two daughters, Caterina and Elisabetta, call home.

Antonio Mario Zaccheo

Born to a family of winemakers, his experience began at the family farm first in Puglia then in Lazio, near Rome. Since his youth, he was involved in all aspects of grape growing and winemaking, as well as sales, never having any doubt that he was going to remain a winemaker. After graduating from high school he was convinced that the Chianti Classico region was the place for realizing his dreams.

It was destiny that he should meet Giovanni Carlo Sacchet, with whom he shares a love for Tuscany as well as the same passion and objectives. Together they embarked on a great Tuscan adventure called ‘Carpineto’, which today is a quality leader known worldwide.

Estates

Dudda Estate azienda vinicola Carpineto

Greve in Chianti, Frazione Dudda
Area of Chianti Classico)

At 300 meters above sea level (1,000 feet), at the eastern edge of the Chianti Classico region lays the original site of the winery in a location known for centuries as Carpineto.

Today the estate hosts the administrative and winemaking headquarters of the company. The modern, multi-level buildings are surrounded by 8 hectares (20 acres) of dry farmed Chianti Classico vineyards, planted on steep hillsides to Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes.

The winery contains dozens of stainless steel, temperature controlled storage and fermentation tanks, sparkling wine production equipment as well as presses, and bottling equipment of the latest generation.

Below the refrigerated finished goods warehouse there is a large aging cellar excavated below the valley floor. At a naturally constant temperature of 15-17°C (58-62°F), this is Carpineto’s bottle aging cellar where at any given time about one million bottles of wine lay aging for a period ranging from 4/6 months to over 5+ years before release.

Next to this bottle aging cellar, still underground, is the barrel room housing about 1,000 barrels.

Estate of Gaville Azienda Vinicola Carpineto

Gaville
(Alto Valdarno)

Situated on a hilltop at an elevation of 300 meters above sea level (1,000 feet) near the Etruscan village of Gaville, this historic estate of olive trees and vineyards overlooks the Arno river valley to the South and the Chianti Classico hills to the North and East.

The 65 hectares (156 acres) of dry farmed land extends downward a gentle, south-facing slope. The 13 hectares (31 acres) of vineyards are planted mostly to Sangiovese, and other experimental grape varieties. The vineyards, in this pastoral environment, yield age-worthy wines of great structure and intensity and are part of the "Appodiati" single vineyard program.

The vineyards are complemented by a 17-hectare (41 acres) orchard of olive trees that are planted to the classic Tuscan varieties of Frantoio, Moraiolo, Leccino and Pendolino.

Within this estate lies an ancient, traditional farmhouse complex dating back to the 11th century that has been renovated. The main building houses a traditional olive crushing mill, as well as modern decanting and bottling equipment, known in Italian as a "frantoio". T

here are also a multitude of stainless steel tanks used for the storage, racking and blending of the estate’s extra virgin olive oil.

In an underground aging cellar, below the olive oil bottling line, there are about 1,000 barrels exclusively dedicated to the aging of the Farnito Cabernet Sauvignon.

Estate of Chianciano Montepulciano azienda vinicola carpineto
Chianciano/Montepulciano
(Vino Nobile - Siena)

Among the softly rolling hills of the Vino Nobile region of Tuscany lie 184 tillable hectares (442 acres) of land dedicated to vineyards and olive trees at an elevation of 250 meters (800 feet) above sea level.

On this estate there are 84.5 hectares (207 acres) of dry-farmed vineyards. These are planted with new clones of Sangiovese and international grape varietals dedicated to our age worthy wines as well as the Appodiati single vineyard programs.

These state of the art vineyards are planted to modern trellising methods with clones and rootstocks varying according to soil type. Planting densities here often exceed 8,500 plants per hectare (3,300 per acre) yielding wines of great concentration and finesse.

There are also 12 hectares (29 acres) of olive groves planted to the classic Tuscan varieties of Frantoio, Moraiolo, Leccino and Pendolino that are used to produce the estate extra virgin olive oil.

On the estate there is also an old farmhouse complex, complete with vinification and aging cellars that date back to the 1700’s, in which the Vino Nobile wines are produced.

Cellar capacity is approximately 3,700 hl (42,000 gallons) of wood cooperage, mostly oval Slavonian oak casks and small barrels, in addition to 14,500 hl (382,000 gallons) of temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.

A new winery complex complete with additional aging cellars is being built on the estate.

estate of Gavorrano Azienda Vinicola carpineto
Valcolomba
(Maremma – Grosseto)

This is the latest addition to Carpineto’s portfolio of Tuscan estates, a 165 hectare (396 acres) estate in the upper Maremma, near the town of Gavorrano, within the Monteregio DOC appellation.

Located between Bolgheri and the Morellino appellations, in an area with one of the lowest population densities in Italy.

One-third of the estate is occupied by woods densely populated with wildlife, with the balance extending over hillsides of red soil dotted with historic cork oaks and olives, overlooking the Bruna river valley.

The climate, typically Mediterranean, is similar to Sicily’s with limited precipitation in the Summer, which creates an ideal environment for the cultivation of vines.

There are 10 hectares (24 acres) planted to Vermentino, Sangiovese and Merlot, plus 5 hectares (12 acres) planted to ancient olive trees of the variety Frantoio, Moraiolo, Leccino and Pendolino.
